RVA Galleries in Willow Lawn

 Every Wednesday and Thursday from 11-5pm I'm at RVA Galleries in Willow Lawn (right next to the Lenscrafters). We opened up a gallery there until December (depending on how it goes, we may stay into the next year). We're a small gallery, made up of 12 local artists, and Shelly Williams, Beth Ann Booth and myself are there Monday-Saturday. Hope to see you there.

Vintage Longbottom Leaf Ad

Longbottom Leaf is one of the most famous and highly sought-after varieties of pipe-weed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings universe. Grown in the South Farthing of the Shire, it was famously discovered by Merry and Pippin in Saruman's ruined storehouses at Isengard.

Pipe-weed was first domesticated in the Shire around the year 2670 of the Third Age by Tobold Hornblower of Longbottom and it was considered one of the absolute finest blends of Nicotiana (tobacco) in the Shire.

In this fan art, I attempted to capture the feel of vintage tobacco ads.

Pop-Up Art Show

 

If you're in the area, I have a Pop-Up Art Show at the Watkins in Richmond, VA this Friday from 6-8pm that runs until March 21. Matt Lively, Hamilton Glass, Daphne Maxwell-Reid, Allyson Woodruff, Linda Shaw, Julius Davis...and about 20 artists will be showing as well. Years ago, I had a friend who told me, "I love your paintings but damn, there's something about your black and white drawings that really pop." I rarely work in charcoal anymore but decided to do one for this show.

The Diamond print

 This is a beautiful print of an original drawing of The Diamond in Richmond, VA. Built in 1985, it was the home of the minor league team, The Richmond Braves. In 2009, it became the home of The Richmond Flying Squirrels. September 14, 2025, the Squirrels played their final game, as the Diamond will be demolished and the new stadium, Carmax Park, will take its place. The original drawing is 5x7. This will be a limited series of signed and numbered 50 prints.

From Camera to Canvas 2025

 FROM CAMERA TO CANVAS 2025 will take place September 12 at the Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond, Virginia. There is a very light bluish tint on the image that I unfortunately cannot seem to change. The painting looks closer to the two bottom images. I do everything I can to make the images online look as close to how the original is.

12 SECONDS IS THE AVERAGE PIT stop at a NASCAR race. This includes changing all four tires, refueling, maintenance, etc., and it is absolute perfection to watch. The car pulls up, you breathe in, breathe out...breathe in, breathe out...and the car is on its way. Two breaths...that's all. 

In partnership with NASCAR, Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA sponsored a national art show about speed. While most of the artists focused on the speed of the cars (and they are certainly worth it) and others focused on some of the drivers, I watched multiple races and realized that the driver, no matter how good he or she is, is at the mercy of an expert pit crew. My aim in this painting was to focus on the speed of the crew, the blur, the motion, and the abstractness of their movements, the car in high detail. The car is usually zooming...rushing...in full on blur...but in this moment, it's the one thing on the track that is motionless as a small crew of focused individuals, in two breaths...12 seconds, keep the race going.

This painting will be on display, and for sale, at the Richmond International Raceway during Race Week, August 15-16. I will also be live painting on the 15th.

Richmond City Lights

 AN OIL PAINTING I JUST FINISHED that I've titled: Richmond City Lights. The painting is a palette knife, framed in a beautiful, thin floating frame, measures 24"x36" and is on display in my gallery space at Crossroads Art Center. 

Miles in Blue

I JUST FINISHED THIS PAINTING OF jazz legend, Miles Davis. A little-known fact is that Miles Davis was inspired by Pablo Picasso's Blue Period, and three of his albums reference this - Blue Period (1953), Blue Moods (1955), and Kind of Blue (1959). The background of the painting is a wash of Indigo Blue, and the gold in the trumpet is a glaze of Cadmium Yellow.

The painting is for Crossroads Art Center's Jazz Art Show in March and is framed with a beautiful floating frame.

Riverbend Coffee Drawing

 

I DECIDED TO REVISIT ONE OF my coffee drawings from 2020. The original coffee shop drawings/paintings were literally created with coffee from each coffee shop. I don't know if I'll draw every single coffee shop, but I really love this particular location. For some weird reason, Riverbend reminds me of the bakery from the film, 'As Good As It Gets', when Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt are walking early in the morning, and they stop in to grab warm rolls. In reality, it looks nothing like the bakery in the film but something about it has that stereotypical 'good morning' feeling. The staff has always been friendly to us, and in the morning, there's a solid, warm glow coming from the windows, and on a rainy day, the reflections on the street just make it feel so welcoming.
