Whistler's Mother
If you've ever seen James Whistler's painting, 'Whistler's Mother' this painting was inspired by that. His painting was done in 1871, some 30 years after the Industrial Revolution. I had this weird idea to paint a house seemingly out in the rural landscape, and way off in the distance (barely to be made out) the smokestacks of the large industrial buildings. In the window, you can make out a woman sitting in profile. I imagined we were looking through the window at James Whistler's mother as she was sitting for her portrait.
